majorityworld got their new web page design by running a design contest:
New website design wanted for Majority World Technology
Check out majorityworld's Web page design contest…
We're consultants and thought leaders in the renewable energy and climate change sector focused on emerging markets and global issues. We're also leading some new clean tech initiatives which are looking to make renewable energy a consumer item. The website introduces the business and provides an overview of our services and examples of our projects. It also is a marketing tool via news, newsletter and blog. The site will also be the login to our collaboration/intranet site. Our target audience is project managers from hiring organisations (e.g. United Nations, World Bank, Governments), other consulting firms, stakeholders from developing countries (e.g. businesses, community groups, equipment suppliers), associates and our subcontractors.
it should be modern and clean and fun. We want to be seen as innovators and the site should clearly be out-of-the-ordinary and beyond the normal consulting firm site. Obviously, energy is a core concept ... and we are innovators ... so avoid the obvious and focus on vibrant colors and graphics.
The homepage provides the one-stop overview and should answer most users general information requirements about the business such as: what we do, where we work, opportunities, vision and values. It will also include a regularly updated news feed. Tabs will include Services, Portfolio, Company. A link will be included to Blog page (a 3rd party site to be activated later and not included in this brief). There will also be login to an intranet/collaboration portal (usr+pass, Login, Join, for a client, contractor, staff). The collaboration portal will be a 3rd party site to be activated later and is not included in this brief. The homepage will also offer Newsletter signup (client, contractor, staff) etc ... and links to archives as well as subscriber links to Facebook, LinkedIn etc. The Services tab will provide an overview of our services with links to relevant staff and projects. The Portfolio tab will provide a sorted list of projects (by date, service type, country, client) we have undertaken with links to project briefs. A graphic of the globe will show where our projects have been with click on links to projects sorted by country. The Company tab will provide history of the business, the staff and associates, links to CVs, contact details, contact form, more details on opportunities etc ... The Blog link will link to a 3rd party blog site for my rants and is not included in this brief. Ideally I'd do this on one page. I'm not sure exactly what constitutes a page in terms of the budget? (versus a tab or window etc ...).
What to avoid
even though we do technical and eco things in developing countries ... I don't want to have the cliche tech or eco look ... I want to appear innovative and modern and friendly and vibrant.
I'll be updating content myself and it should be super-easy to do. Feel free to separate textual and iconic elements of logo for use in the page. It all began with a design brief.
A quick, interactive guide helped them understand their design style and captured exactly what they needed in their web page design.
