How Steven.paul.leblanc started their web page design journey

Empire Assault is a web based multiplayer strategy game. The site is in need of a new design as i'm a coder and not very good with design. The game is a future based war strategy game where players explore land, build their empires and attack each other.
What industry do you think your business is most related to?
I'm a huge fan of graphical backgrounds and websites that lean towards the new age flow (colourful, rounded corners, etc.) It doesn't have to be to the extent that these websites are, but these do a great job with their designs.
Main Page: Something to catch the attention of people visiting the site. Name (Empire Assault), possibly a logo or graphics related to the theme of the game.
Game Help / Manual: A wiki sort of design that has a menu, search and can relay game specific information to the players.
Screenshots: An image gallery that shows off images of the game itself and provides some information aswell.
Forums / Message Boards: Building a custom phpBB template based on this design to match the flow of the website and integrate everything into one.
Game Layout: Looking for something that is similar to the main site in looks but setup slightly differently in the way things are laid out. Top Menu, Optional Side Sub-Menu and a basic table / content field.
Screenshots from the logged in part of the game are attached. Most of the feedback from players has been that the design is too dark and the defaults fonts and text size is a bit hard to read.
One thing I do want to mention is I don't like the full length left menu (currently using frames), I would prefer a top menu for the primary links with an optional sub-menu for some pages that have secondary links.
Primary links in the game will consist of: Overview, My Empires, Navigation, Research, Alliances, Forums, Scoreboards and Logout Links.
