Hi, I sell commemorative coins for people in Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12 Step Programs. These coins are given as gifts to people celebrating month or years with no drugs or alcohol. Because of that, the front of the coin will need to display a number representing the amount of time. Typically each coin will have a number from 1-50 on it. It is done with Roman or Arabic Style numbering. This coin will be 40mm round. Please remember that when submitting your ideas.
I want this design to be made specifically as a gift to women in a Recovery Program. The women that would be giving these coins to one another are very close. They have a strong bond and have shared many things with one another about their lives. They have helped each other with different problems. They are very close like family would be. They are good friends and help each other so that their lives are better. They often give emotional support when they are going through tough times and celebrate together in good times. Sometimes their relationships are like Mother and Daughter and many times it is like Big Sister and Little Sister. These women typically range in age from 20 to 60’s. They always strive to help one another become better women, better wives, better family members, and better workers. These relationships with one another last for many years. They grow up and experience life together. They take joy in seeing the lives of their friends get better. When a woman has made her life better, she often tries to help the new woman whose life may currently be going bad. These women believe that when they come to a recovery program like Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous and they stop using drugs and alcohol with the help of other women, that they now owe that same help to a woman that is new to the program. Women who recover feel responsible in helping the next woman recover. Recovery is like a gift that must be given away so that other people can experience the same freedom and joy one gets from no longer using drugs or alcohol and improving their life. This is why these tight bonds and friendships are formed. These coins will be used to celebrate that relationship and the length of time the recipient has gone without using drugs or alcohol.
The front of the coin will be the main focal point. It is what everyone will see. It will need to include a space where the number signifying years of recovery will be displayed. This can be worked in any way you want into your design. We just need to remember that, like a Birthday Cake, the recipient needs to see how many candles are on the cake. So the coin must clearly display the number on it showing the amount of years.
This design will be displayed on a metal coin. I will attach coin pictures below that are currently in my marketplace, as well as coins that I currently offer. I will also show other coins that will demonstrate the types of designs that are capable of being worked into a coin. Please be bold with colors and designs. I don't like designs that look like currency coins. The design does not have to be bronze/gold/silver based. It can have colors.
The first idea I had about how this design was showing a woman on the front that symbolized independence, freedom, strength, beauty, and toughness. This would be someone like Rosie The Riveter. She is an American cultural icon of World War II, representing the women who worked in factories and shipyards, many of whom produced munitions and war supplies. These women sometimes took entirely new jobs replacing the male workers who joined the military. See photos attached. We cannot use this image in our design but we do want to represent her strength. I would like a more modern representation of her. Different ideas for the image can be Pinup style/Gothic/Alternative/Punk/SKA/Nerd/Librarian or Teacher. The important thing is the message the image displays. I would like to portray an image that is sexy and strong.
Another way to go with the front design is to have 2 or more women symbolized showing the closeness and tight bond they have. Something symbolizing their “sisterhood” and their special relationship.
I am also open to totally different visual presentations that you think may work. As long as the theme is geared toward women. The coin design you make does not have to be a person/character on the front. Please feel free to experiment and try something bold and different. Hearts, flowers, animals and other symbols are ok.
If you can, please explain your idea of the design so that I understand and do not miss it. I am a guy so I may not be intuitive enough to see all that you did.
I think an expression on the front of the coin design would be a good theme. With Rosie the Riveter you see the expression “We Can Do It”. I like that one but am open to any others you think can match the theme. Examples like below...
We Can Do It
Sisters in Recovery
Happy Joyous Free
Strength In Numbers
Sexy and Sober
Recovery Looks Good On You
The rear of the coin should probably carry the same visual/color theme. It should have one of these prayers below. Use what you think fits best in your design. Only one of these prayers needs to be on the back.
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
3rd Step Prayer
"God, I offer myself to Thee--to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always!”
7th Step Prayer
My Creator, I am now willing that You should have all of me, good and bad.
I pray that You now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to You and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do Your bidding.
