PLAYING CARDS AND TUCK BOX
The purpose of this contest is to design our first product, one set of
custom bridge-size playing cards in a custom tuck box. The design
be used for a family of several series of playing cards across
different subject areas (e.g. math, physics, chemistry) with
This contest runs in parallel with our LOGO contest:
We want to launch a family of several series of cards that can be
distinguished by different colors and designs, while still being easy
to recognize as being in the same brand. Think "bicycle cards", for
instance, but do NOT think "bicycle card style".
We want our own style that fits our demographic - something positive,
bright, playful and enthusiastic that promotes learning.
There are 3 main parts to this design task:
1. CARD BACKS
The back of the cards could eventually be very creative, but to begin
with we'd like to see these 2-3 different design options for the card
a) A general pattern/artwork incorporating the "Simply Clever Cards"
logo (which can be more or less dominating) that will only vary in
color from deck to deck. This could be varied/replaced by other
artwork in the future.
b) A more specific design relating to the topic of the deck, also
including the logo somewhere, but less prominent. It could include
symbols or an image that indicates the contents of the deck (e.g.
geometry, nuclear physics, biochemistry, brain research,
For this contest we are looking for the following topic (which will be
our first deck on the mathematics series): "multiplication, division
and fractions". So, please use symbols/imagery that communicates to
the user that these cards are about "multiplication, division and
c) the same as b) - but add the product name "Simply Clever
Multiplication, Division and Fractions". An alternative is to add
"Multiplication, Division and Fractions" to the logo.
2. CARD FRONTS WITH/WITHOUT PIPS
The deck of 52 cards (13 x 4 colors) plus 2-4 jokers will need a
distinctive, easy, playful (though not childish) style that can be
reused across the entire series of cards. Not too similar to famous
games like UNO, Set and such, but can be inspired by these. We'd like
to see at least two options:
a) white background and colored frame with or without pips
b) colored background with or without pips
The design needs to accommodate different kinds of symbols,
illustrations or text on the cards, depending on the topic/theme. We
need quite a lot of space on the cards for various contents, so the
frame and pips shouldn't be too large.
Different card suppliers/printers have different options, so we cannot
guarantee full bleed printing (although we would like to have it). It
is probably safer to assume a quiet zone to be compatible with all
CARD COLORS AND PIPS
We do NOT want to use the standard bridge colors/pips at all.
We want to find a total of 8 colors to be used, so it would be
possible to make double decks with different sets of colors. Example
color combination below, but we are open for other colors and/or hues
(e.g. dark, light, dirty, pastel, etc):
Set 1: Red, blue, green, yellow
Set 2: Purple, teal, orange, brown
For the demonstration deck, please draw the following on the card
- 1 large 2-digit number for the card value (range 0-12) in the upper
- 3 smaller 3-digit numbers in the lower half (can be 1, 2 or 3
The smaller numbers must have space for up to 3 digits, and may be
This comes in addition to the pips showing the same number in the
corners. We want 2 pips, like on regular bridge cards.
3. TUCK BOXES
The box front will normally match the card backs, but we are open for
other ideas. The box back will contain text with contact info etc,
the box sides might contain info text on one side and a URL on the
other side. The box bottom will have the UPC/EAN bar code, so it
to have a "large" white rectangle in the middle for this purpose (the
entire bottom should not be white).
The cards will be standard bridge size and we need files according to
industry specs that can be sent to the card factory. Most likely it
will be necessary with a full set of vector graphics files, like .ai
Will provide exact specs once we've determined the supplier and have
the relevant templates.
What we are looking for now, in order to pick a winner of the contest,
are the artistic designs as well as proof that the winner can provide
the necessary quality work with relevant specs for industrial
Once we have chosen the winner, we will request the actual work to be
completed using the design templates and precise specs, if it doesn't
already comply with these.
Unless there are compelling reasons not to, we expect to work with the
winner on designing the future decks in the same series, and any
additional artwork for the card backs. Other design jobs for the
company might also be relevant. Therefore we ask for understanding
that we are not currently in a position to offer a large amount, but
this contest is the ticket to a what we hope will be a long and
Thank you for the attention!
