Wesley Watts got their new other graphic design by running a design contest:
Design a Hymnal Cover
Check out Wesley Watts's Other Graphic Design contest…
Sumphonia is a nonprofit foundation whose purpose is to compile and distribute materials for worship, especially those materials related to congregational hymn worship.
What's your vision?
We need a cover for a hardback hymnal. Format is 6" x 8.33". Title is "Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs." It should also say "Phrased Notation" on the cover. In short, the cover should have the title and layout designation, much like a Bible cover has "Holy Bible" and "New King James Version.” This hymnal contains 550 standard hymns + 300 of all genre, including contemporary songs, folk hymns, high church hymns, etc. The cover needs to reflect that content. We do not want the hymnal cover to appear modern, but we do not want it to be on the other extreme either—not too ornate or gaudy. We would lean far more toward toward the formal rather than the informal, with a "classic" look. Our own efforts have employed Celtic artwork, but no crosses or other denominational artwork, please. The title font should be in BakerSignet. The layout designation (i.e. "Phrased Notation") should be Arial or BakerSignet. We are allowed to have text that is both embossed and dyed as well as artwork that is embossed (dyed or non-dyed, either way).
Our audience is conservative, both young and old, all genders. And they regard the worship service a serious matter, not a place to get jazzed up by the preacher. They relate to Psalm 95: "Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker."
