WARPit (Waste Action Reuse Portal) Brief WARPit is an easy to use online portal which provides a platform for organisations to redistribute (give, loan) resources legally and conveniently within the organisation and beyond, within other organisations. • Makes it easy for staff to find others in their organisation (and the rest of the network) with “stuff” spare- reducing procurement spend. • Makes it easy for staff who are disposing of “stuff” to find new owners- saving on waste disposal. The tool demonstrates significant savings on purchasing and waste disposal costs, as well as avoiding landfill and carbon emissions. WARPit is saving organisations £10,000s. University of Brighton saved £20K in first 2 months. Dundee City Council saved £10K in first 3 weeks. St Andrew’s University saved £1k in the first day! Sunderland City Council saved £250K in 20 months. WARPit works with furniture, equipment or any resource, including fixtures and fittings, electrical, books , stationery , lab equipment, technical equipment etc etc. Internal redistribution WARPit sets up a market place where staff can give away or loan/rent out their surplus or underused assets to other staff in a secure controlled online environment. The WARPit reciprocal sharing network To get maximum resource efficiency organisations should transfer resources within the organisation. Sometimes deadlines are tight and new owners cannot be found within the same organisation. WARPit also sets up the technical and legal framework to allow organisations to link up and reciprocally share their surplus resources locally and regionally with other organisations. This creates a whole region/city/town level resource sharing organisational network improving the sustainability of all organisations in the network. Benefits to the organisation Record and track assets across the organisation Convenient marketplace for staff Storage stock flow facility Loan out underused resources with idling capacity Open up internal network to partners prioritising internal staff Download management reports for procurement and environmental savings Use system to manage whole building clearances Deals with waste legislation and liability Control which staff get access Integrates with existing portering or task management software Financial benefits 1) The contributor avoids waste disposal costs 2) The claimant avoids the cost of purchasing new resources. 3) Administration time for purchasing/ disposal reduced. 4) Better space use- good way to declutter 5) Generate revenue by renting underused assets to others Environmental benefits 1) Waste is diverted from landfill 2) Carbon emissions associated with purchasing (manufacturing and transport) new goods are reduced. 3) Manages recycling and refurbishment of resources that are not reusable Social benefits 1) Organisations collaborate easily 2) Charities and community groups save money to focus on charitable pursuits 3) Improves civic leadership of client organisation Case studies and awards UCL using WARPit; http://www.ucl.ac.uk/news/staff/staff-news/0613/20062013-uclwinsslabsaward WRAP independent case study; www.wrap.org.uk/content/fm-case-study-office-re-use-scheme-furnishes-council-cost-savings Independent Zero Waste Scotland Case study with St Andrew’s University; https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByYCIOMHdhpRbGs4a0d3bkFGZzg/edit?usp=sharing Who is using WARPit?
