A Spiritual Resource Center
Most Christian Science local churches have what is called a "Reading Room" that is open to the public. Christian Science Reading Rooms are designed to be peaceful, inviting places to explore spiritual answers to life’s many questions. Each Reading Room is both a bookstore and a quiet place for prayer and study, where everyone is welcome. IMPORTANT NOTE FOR DESIGNERS: Please don't use an icon of a book. Please see the Notes section below for more details.
We're remodeling our Reading Room and are going to reopen it in the coming weeks. We'd like the new logo to reflect the spirit that we are a vibrant, welcoming place for the whole community. It is very important that the logo have a contemporary look that would appeal to millennials. KEY INFORMATION: We’re open to text-only designs in addition to ones that include graphical elements to embellish the words (i.e. swoops, circles, abstract shapes, etc.). Please don't include religious symbols in the design such as a cross. We're already using the cross elsewhere. Also, please don’t use an icon of a book, a computer, or a combination of the two. Although the name of the retail space includes the words, "reading room," there is now a very strong digital presence in the space, so visuals showing books don’t give the complete picture. In other words, a lot of the content people can access is in the form of videos and online material (accessed on a variety of platforms such as touch screen kiosks, computers, etc.). In fact, that digital content is more dominant than the traditional books and literature. We'd like to see two treatments of the wording: One with the title (Christian Science Reading Room) more dominant and one with the slogan (A Spiritual Resource Center) more dominant. In the case of having the slogan larger, we could easily see having Christian Science Reading Room a lot smaller. We could see a scenario where the slogan doesn't include the word "A." The attached photo shows the space where the sign will go --- on the wall above the window. That wall is about 6' high and 18' wide, but the city limits us to about 20 square feet of space (about a 1/3 of the area). The wall has been painted a greyish brown. The logo you design will be painted on the exterior wall. Eventually, we might get some or all of it laser cut and mounted if the design allows for that but it's not required. The font we've used for signage inside the Reading Room is Open Sans Bold and MuseoSlab-300, but you're welcome to use/try something else. We're not married to those fonts. Also, the title and the tagline don't need to be in the same font. Thinking about the logo, we’d like it to reflect the vibrant activity of the Reading Room as much as the content that is found in the books and online materials. Just like local libraries tend to function like community centers these days, our Reading Room is like a spiritual community center. The Reading Room is a place for discovery and engagement with others. There’s always an attendant there to help visitors find resources that will help them with their spiritual journey. Attendants are also happy to answer questions about God, healing, spirituality, etc.; they enjoy talking with visitors and sharing ideas. The Reading Room often hosts lectures, discussions, and study groups in the Reading Room that community members are invited to attend.
