jaturlington got their new logo design by running a design contest:
Design a simple logo promoting sustainability, resilience, and stewardship of open lands in Texas
Check out jaturlington's Logo design contest…
We need a logo design for our Department at Texas A&M University. Our department is named Ecosystem Science and Management, which is often abbreviated as ESSM. We are the product of a merger between programs focused on forests, rangeland or arid lands, and wetlands. We desire a simple, clean logo that conveys a message of rangeland, wetland and forest ecosystem stewardship across Texas. Our target audience is the community of people interested in land stewardship. This includes the general public, incoming students and our colleagues across campus. Our audience is sophisticated enough to know the difference between a tree or plant that belongs in Texas and one that is from New York so regional accuracy is important. As a Department, we are breaking new ground by merging what were simpler concepts like forests and wetlands and now focusing on the ecosystems that makes up these individual ecoregions. The Ecoregions of Texas transition from the salt marshes of the Gulf Coast, the pine forests of east Texas, the post oak woodlands, shrub and grasslands of central Texas to the desserts of west Texas. These lands are managed for pasture, natural beauty, biodiversity, home sites, wood products, parks and wildlife. In the Ecosystem Science and Management Department we integrate knowledge from several science disciplines with a focus on sustainable rangeland, forest and wetland management. The synergy that arises from the integration of biological, physical and social sciences in ESSM gives rise to novel solutions suitable for a changing climate. We are not entrenched in any one discipline or any single ecosystem, we are as broad and diverse as the environment we live in and the issues we face. Words in the logo? We can’t put the words Texas A&M University in the logo and the name of the Department is too long for a logo. ESSM or Ecosystems could be used in the logo however but it is not required.
