eldurrette got their new logo design by running a design contest:
City of Refuge United Church of Christ Logo
Check out eldurrette's Logo design contest…
City of Refuge United Church of Christ is in need of a logo. First and foremost, City of Refuge United Church of Christ (“CoR”) is a ministry of restoration. The church is “radically inclusive” welcoming all persons regardless of race, color, age, gender, or sexual orientation. It is not uncommon in our congregation to see homeless or transgender persons sitting side-by-side with seemingly straight-laced doctors and lawyers. CoR was started by a small group of gay, lesbian and HIV positive Christians that had been ostracized from their churches of origin. Over the past twenty years it has grown from a gathering that met in a tiny living room to a several hundred member congregation. For most of its history CoR was located in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district, a gritty neighborhood with a large homeless population, but recently the church expanded its ministry to Oakland, CA in order to serve more of the people at society’s margins. This move is what has prompted CoR to rethink its branding. City of Refuge takes it name from the six cities in the Bible where those accused of a crime could go to avoid death. The cities of refuge were a safe haven for those whom society would cast out. Similarly our church tries to provide a safe haven for people who have been told there is no room in Christianity for them. If the logo could actually speak, the first words it would say would be “Welcome Home.” The logo need not be excessively literal, subtle abstraction is preferred. Rainbow themes should be avoided at all costs. The logo will ultimately be used on stationery, the web, and on outdoor signage, so please keep that in mind as you create your designs. Above all else, many thanks to all who take up this design challenge!
