How kokame started their logo design journey

Looking for a logo for a new trading card game about native Hawaiian birds! This logo will be PRINTED ON THE BACK OF TRADING CARDS, so please keep that in mind with your design. The card game is an educational conservation outreach tool that teaches kids (and kids at heart) about Hawai`i's native birds (think Pokemon cards, but a little different). Even though the card game is aimed at younger audiences, we are looking for a logo that is not too childish so that it can reach as wide of an audience as possible. Think something you'd love to sport as a sticker or t-shirt too! Versatility is key.
We would like a design that includes the stylized silhouette of a native Hawaiian bird with a curved beak (such as an `i`iwi, `akiapola`au, etc.), along WITH THE HAWAIIAN ISLAND CHAIN displayed in the bird's curved beak. Either the head or the whole body of the bird can be used for the stylized silhouette. For colors, we were considering different versions: a colored version (with the bird in color, not sure about text color), a black version for easy printing, and a version that has color/texture of Hawaiian koa wood. The initial design in any of these versions is acceptable to give us a basic idea. We are hoping to have the design like an emblem, so maybe a circular shape with the words or something similar.

Perhaps the colors of the native Hawaiian birds, black, or koa wood texture?

We DO NOT have the rights to the following photos, but they are just to show you examples of what some of the birds/wood look like. 'I`iwi (red) and 'Akiapola`au (yellow), and koa wood.
Maui Forest Bird's logo is an example of something we like.
