We are looking for a talented artist who can create 2D illustrations and sprites for a children's audience. We are creating a children's book that will be made into an interactive mobile phone/tablet app. We are requesting 2 illustration for this contest to help us to select which artist who can best bring the story to life. Upon completing the contest, we will supply the designer with instructions for the remaining 10 pages, a title page and app icon. This $1200 prize will be released once the illustrator has completed all 12 pages, title page and app icon.
The story is about a penguin named Pengi. Each page will describe something Pengi likes to do. The text on the page will always end in a repeated word intended to be read in a sing songy kind of way. Every page MUST also have a background that fits the style of the penguin drawn.
Page 1 -
On nice days Pengi likes to walk.
Watch him waddle waddle, waddle waddle.
Page 2 -
Pengi likes to dance.
Look at his tail wiggle wiggle, wiggle wiggle.
This app is intended to be interactive so the repeated word must have some associated sprite animation. This animation should be able to be repeated if the child touches Pengi on the screen. So make sure the animation end with the character in the original position again. Our development team will be programming the touch trigger, movement, timing, and any image rotations necessary but we will need the appropriate sprite animation frames from the artist.
Also the artist are not limited to just animating the main action. Other smaller animations may be included which can be triggered by touch or swipe. For example, an artist might put a pinwheel in the background which will spin when child touches the pinwheel on the screen.
The more interactions that can be triggered by the child, the better.
- Final output should be an Adobe Illustrator CS5 file (preferred) or a vector graphic in .EPS format.
- 2D sprites should be used to animate anything on the page.
- Submit samples with the page text paired with the illustration.
- Also attach the sprite animation sheets that are applied to the illustrations on a separate page and an explanation of how the sprites should animate.
This takes place in an arctic setting. You can use imagery like the north pole, igloos, icebergs, other arctic animals, snow covered forests etc.
We are looking for a very cute cartoony style, as colorful as possible given the artic setting. The attached penguin image is a rough illustration of the character Pengi. Feel free to make some modifications to the character as needed but please do not deviate too far from the original look. I would like the general head-to-body proportion to stay similar to the original.
Also attached is a picture of a crab in a style that I like, so if this style can be adapted to the penguin and the overall look of the book then it should be perfect. DO NOT include the crab itself in the illustration. It should just be used as an example of the type of style I like.
Lastly I've attached a sample sprite sheet that I found online. Please use this format when creating your frames of animation.
