We are making 3 Christian books on Genesis, Creation, Revelation and the Bible. They are a photography journey of the story of the Bible.
I've got the books done and edited. See http://www.thebookoflife.com, which has everything live and visible.
I'm (VERY) happy with covers, logo, branding, typography (text and fonts colors etc). All photos are done and they are all the same size (2x3 ratio landscape) due to how I shot them. The books are already done also (fully edited, I prefer not to change ANY text).
The only feeling I have is that the books are a bit "boring" to be honest in their inside pages. The content pages are either all white/black bg, and the only thing that adds any interest is the photo which sits by itself on a page. The white/black pages also have a lot of contrast going from one to the next, which is not necessarily the best. The photos looks best on black/dark backgrounds but that could be altered. The verses/text look best on white (very light) backgrounds for readability.
I'm looking for a designer to take a fresh look at the interior pages and make some more visually appealing designs utilizing page backgrounds/border edge style elements . I don't want to make the verse text hard to read however. If you think of designing a graphic that could be dropped in as a background BEHIND what is already in the book pages, that will serve to guide you.
Also there are only about 5 major page types in the books
1. Into pages
2. Misc pages (table of contents, copyright, etc...)
3. Section chapter pages
4. Verse pages, very boring, but need to maintain verse readability
5. Photo pages (one photo per page still, darker bg preferred, but styling somehow instead of just "black bg" could be helpful.
Two "thoughts" I've had for improving the design/visual appeal of the inner pages:
1. Old Parchment kind of look/design: I like how old bibles and parchment looks (think of the Jesus Calling book), think of old bible pages, etc...so that is one possibility
2. Stick With Nature/Scenery design: I have a lot of photographic content which could be used additionally in the creation of backgrounds for these pages, monotoned, outlines, duotoned, etc...just as ideas.
The designs don't have to be overwhelming, I prefer they aren't actually. Subtle but effective and elegant and not compete with page text or photo, but help to frame them better somehow.
The main problem is any background's i've tried reduce text readability to awful levels if not done properly, hence this design contest.
I guess I'm looking for 5 page designs to use for those pages. The text and photos stay as is but all else around them is fair to alter with design/accent elements. The deliverables should be 2000 height x 3000 width pixel sized images. I'd like master PSD files, and I make jpg's from them as required. Art used must be suitable for using in a eBook and printed book (I plan on printing these eventually). The print design MAY be different than the eBook design (somewhat), I've not finalized the print yet. I'm focused on eBook's only at this time.
NOTE: so the 5 page designs would be applied to each page in all books that apply to that page type. Please keep this in mind. For instance, the "verse page" design will be repeated about 120 times in book 1, 200 times in book 2, etc...just with different verse text on top of it.
NOTE 2: These are some "similar" book titles, just for reference. I'm not saying I like any of their page designs, I'm just showing things that could be deemed similar books. The first max lucado book probably has the best inner page designs of them. The colors aren't what I'm after (we are in natural and earth tones, black, gold, etc), but anyway, just things to consider looking at:
NOTE 3: I'm not interested in just plopping a paper bg (or even image) on the pages, I could get those easily at stock sites. Thanks. I'm after something like the first image on this page (very well done but not quite what I need): https://play.google.com/store/apps/…MobileApps
It has the right colors, a design to it, sits mostly around the edges of the page, etc etc...
