When Maddie’s husband, Tony, disappears following a car crash in the Brecon Beacons, the police quickly run out of plausible explanations. With her fragile sanity unravelling, and tensions with Tony’s family running high, Maddie starts to lose all hope… until a man appears out of the woods claiming to be her husband. Despite his appearance and convincing recollections, Maddie begins to suspect he’s not the man he claims to be. Maybe, not even a man at all… Surrogate is a folk horror / thriller with a bleak setting in the Welsh mountains and a feeling of ominous dread throughout
Horror / thriller fans
Aside from the guidance on colour and the story's tone (above) I just want something very striking and original, to convey an ominous atmosphere. It should also be able to tie in aesthetically with the cover for my previous novel, Prey, which is in the reference images. There is a lot of talk of Celtic / Welsh folklore and paganism. Even references to faeries, Cernunos etc, and a couple of key scenes featuring pagan symbols such as the seven pointed star (first drawn on the floor of a secret room in charcoal, then later drawn on the protagonist's back in black ink). Key themes are family, birth and death, paganism, folklore, cults, and the presence of another, secret world just out of out reach. I would like the design to be striking and simple, much like the cover for Prey, but in a colder colour palate. I'd like a similar font too. I'm a big fan of old looking, woodcut style artwork, heavy on symbolism, only with more colour if possible. I'd like the blurb on the cover too, ideally at the very bottom or very top in smaller font
What to avoid
Cliched horror / thriller images. So that means - despite them being present in the story - no use of woods, creepy houses, emaciated people walking on an empty lane, skulls, blood etc.
