jweremeeva got their new book cover by running a design contest:
An EBOOK COVER for an iconoclastic history of Russia for an American humor writer and historian
Check out jweremeeva's Book cover contest…
I write sophisticated humorous memoirs/narrative non-fiction about my expatriate life in Russia, Russian history, and food.
What's your vision?
I need a dynamic ebook cover for a companion piece to my primary book. The primary book is called Lenin Lives Next Door: Marriage, Martinis, and Mayhem in Moscow, which is a memoir about living in Russia. You can find details about this book at this link: http://amzn.to/1O3AIbU The companion piece for which I need an ebook cover is called: Have Personality Disorder, Will Rule Russia: An Iconoclastic History by a Recovering Russophile. Text to be included on the cover: Full title: Have Personality Disorder, Will Rule Russia: An Iconoclastic History by a Recovering Russophile My name: Jennifer Eremeeva Optional: author of Lenin Lives Next Door This is a tongue-in-cheek treatment of 1000 years of Russian history, that focuses on a number of rulers of Russia who I describe as "alpha males rulers with at least one personality disorder." This companion piece does several things in my sales process: 1. It is given away to readers of my book(s) on request. 2. It is offered as a free download from my site. 3. It is a calling card I use to secure speaking engagements. 4. It is a thank you to clients who use my guiding/speaking services in Russia, also as a reference for journalists and students who are in touch with me about history and culture questions. 5. It is updated frequently to reflect changes in current events in Russia. 6. It will be offered as a permafree product on amazon and promoted to generate more interest in my work, my primary book and its upcoming sequel. I would like the cover to "march with" Lenin Lives Next Door, so they appear to be a "set." Therefore, I suggest using the color D12129 as either a base color or as an accent color somewhere in the design. You do not, however, have to use the same style. In fact, I would lean towards a non-cartoon type presentation. I'd love to see a treatment using a different font and some more white space. I've created a PINTEREST board with images to help you get started: https://www.pinterest.com/jennifereremeev/design-board-for-personality-disorder/ I'm eager to see all kinds of design concepts for this project but I have a few ideas that might kick start inspiration. 1. Use a matrioyshka doll concept -- These are the wooden stacking dolls that are a signature souvenir of Russia. Many dolls are decorated in traditional themes, but after perestroika, we came to see a number of dolls decorated to look like Soviet or imperial Russian rulers. A google search of "matrioyshka + political leaders" will give you a good idea of what this looks like. I would like to feature the following rulers of Russia and I am including links to their public domain wikicommons portraits for your review Ivan The Terrible https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Иван_IV#/media/File:Iioan4.jpg Peter the Great https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Пётр_I#/media/File:Jean-Marc_Nattier,_Pierre_Ier_(1717).jpg Catherine the Great https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Екатерина_II_Алексеевна#/media/File:Catherine_II_by_J.B.Lampi_(1793,_Hermitage).jpg Vladimir Lenin https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Portraits_of_Vladimir_Lenin#/media/File:Lenin_CL_Colour.jpg Josef Stalin https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Иосиф_Виссарионович_Сталин#/media/File:Stalin_lg_zlx1.jpg 2. Play with the ICON concept Another approach is to play with the idea of an ICON using the portraits of these rulers, forming them into an iconostasis or icon screen. but I am also very interested in any original design concepts and happy to review any suggestions. 3. Use the idea of a classified ad, tying in the title. But I suggest you use cyrillic backdrops. And I'm delighted to respond to any questions via the 99 designs message boards.
There is an earlier version of this cover, which I do not feel was a great success from either a design point of view or in terms of the attractability on online retailers. I feel it is clunky, unprofessional, and looks like a rush job. You can see more at http://jennifereremeeva.com
