An amputee author’s book in ‘general reading’ category, on his sailing a boat round the world.
What's your vision?
I am over 100% disabled, being an amputee above the knee. I have written on my sailing voyage on a small sailing yacht - around the world - setting a world record of being the first physically handicapped person to do so. The book recounts the human story, an adventure story, a travelogue, and also about men in uniform, particularly from our training institution in India - the National Defence Academy and how they replicate similarly trained humans for the army. Anecdotes within the main story leave it as a conclusion for the reader to arrive at as to why and what we strive for, achieve and value.
A.K. Singh, an eleven year old, was educated in the Rashtriya Indian Military College with the obvious aspirations of his parents, despite being born physically challenged on several counts. His hard struggle to be at least as good as the next average boy gives him a taste of success, which propels him progressively towards higher aspiration and eventually success at the top in all fields he touches. Trained at the National Defence Academy, Pune by persons of dedication and integrity beyond the normal, who leave indelible impressions on him and mould him, and his values in life. His imagination lures him on to plan to sail around the world. This idea is to consume him despite impossible odds as he is tragically amputated above left knee consequent to a hang gliding crash. Can he still sail round the World? Does he still want to? He is face to face with a difficult decision. The voyage round the World, beginning and ending in Mumbai, over 50 thousand kilometers and 15 months later is a global travel through exquisite remote mid-ocean islands and far-away lands and people. All along he is emotionally located in the Army, and his family. The making of the Indian Army Officer is vibrantly disclosed with anecdotes and real life examples of his comrades, many of whom we have lost in valiant action over the past decades. The author’s scope is to dwell upon the richness of life and what it offers- irrespective of tribulations and disabilities - as larger than even the record he sets inadvertently – unwittingly becoming the first physically handicapped person to sail round the World in a yacht. The cover is to have the title –‘BEYOND HORIZONS – Around the World in a Sailing Boat’ Also, the disability symbol may be used somewhere on the cover. The images attached do not have to be included - but they are to provide some ideas of real images during the sailing expedition. Looking for different design ideas - possibly some illustrated covers, sketch kind of look, etc - possibly with a clean and modern look and feel.
